For literal eons a man’s home has been his castle, a sanctuary and reprieve from the harsh realities of the outside world. While this hypothetical notion may be outdated today, the truth underpinning it is still very much relevant and has found new ways to manifest itself.
Enter the Man Cave. A safe space, reserved territory or mantuary if you will. The modern-day equivalent of a castle that any man can truly call his own. Of course, in order to be able to accomplish this, he’s going to need a unique design and an assortment of must-haves that cater to his personal interests if he wants to kick his feet up in style. Here are a few ideas to make your man cave your own.
1. A Bar
What’s manlier than kicking back with a cold drink in your hand? Not much, that’s why it’s our top suggestion. Besides, whether you are just having your buddies over or throwing a party for the entire neighborhood, you and your guests are going to be in need of some refreshments.
Since no man cave can ever be complete without one, the only question that remains is what kind of bar will you choose?
You can go to a full-fledged modern bar with all the bells and whistles, including guest seating, a television set, and such a wide assortment of beverages that it rivals your local pub.
Or you can be decidedly more modest with a wall shelf doubling as a bar and your regular old sofa for seating. This will depend both on the amount of physical space you have available as well as budget, either way you have plenty of options and finishes to choose from.
2. Games
Now that the drinks are flowing and everyone is having a great time, here’s how you keep it going. By having some well-thought out games available for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s arcade games, sports games, video games or even casino games like roulette. Your options here are only limited by your imagination.
If you’re a die-hard sports fan, then a foosball, air-hockey or a pool table should be on your list. Not only would they keep your guests entertained for hours, but it’s also a sure fire way to impress even that one friend who never doles out compliments easily.
If sports aren’t your thing, a classic arcade game will induce nostalgia and bring out the kid in just about anyone. Not to mention that you have the option of charging them a few pennies for this privilege. This also extends to video games, with classic multiplayer titles like NBA 2K, Call of Duty, and even Goldeneye 007 doing the job.
3. Movie Theater
Any man cave worth its weight has at least one (or more) super-sized flat screen TVs. The best part is that this need not be an expensive addition, in fact personal home theaters can now be obtained for less than ever.
However, there is no need to let such minimums be your maximums. In fact, if you already have a game day setup with sofas, recliners, and the works, then a theater projector may be the way to go and yes, a quality projector can also be had for less than $2,000 in case you’re wondering.
There are also plenty of other options, depending on the theme of your cave (if any), from multiple screens to simultaneously watch just about every live sporting event to 1080p theater projectors that will turn your room into a night at the movies anytime you want.
4. Sound System
The last suggestion leads directly into this one, as what compliments an enjoyable viewing experience more than the perfect audio setup.
The importance of a quality sound system can’t be understated, if you have ever ridden in an expensive car with no sound system, then you can appreciate where we are coming from on this. Typically, the best man cave sound systems fit into four categories:
- A surround sound system
- A sound bar
- A sound bar and speaker combo
- A music sound system
Each option comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. For example, a surround sound system, while more expensive will leave you completely immersed in your viewing experience, so it is definitely ideal for a home theater setup. A sound bar on the other hand, will suit just fine if you have a single flat-screen setup, as it will improve the sound quality of your TV.
The last two options, a sound bar and speaker combo and a complete sound system, respectively, are really more suited for turning your space into a party zone. These usually feature a Bluetooth or wireless connection to connect to your smartphone, making them ideal for entertaining your guests.
5. Art
By art we don’t mean Picasso’s and Van Gogh’s. This can be anything from classic movie posters to framed jerseys, as empty walls are bland and lacking flavor, something which no man ever wants to be accused of.
But why stop at some basic wall displays? If you want to show off your interests and passions with your personalized man cave, then accessories and decorations can be your best friends. Nothing compliments a designer sports themed room better than some team or player memorabilia and pennants, banners or an autographed ball all fit this mold.
If you’re looking for something for something to really make your space stand out, why not a neon sign or multiple? Or if you are looking for an interactive display, perhaps a darts board will inspire you to work on your aim while having some fun all the same.
The underlying idea of art or decor should be as a final touch to make the entire room come together as a truly unique, vibrant space.
